How many hours of sleep is necessary? 


The amount of sleep one needs generally depends on your age. 

  • A newborn baby needs 14 to 17 hours of sleep a day.  
  • It is considered good for a 1-year-old baby to sleep for about 10 hours at night, along with a 4-hour nap during the day.  
  • A 2-year-old should get about 11 to 12 hours of sleep a night, along with an afternoon nap of 1 to 2 hours. 
  • 10 to 13 hours of sleep is considered good for a child of 3 to 5 years. 
  • A child of 6 to 13 years needs to sleep for 9 to 11 hours. 
  • Teenagers between the ages of 14 and 17 should get 8 to 10 hours of sleep. 
  • Adults need 7 to 9 hours of sleep.
