Yoga Knowledge Series (5) - Traditional type of yoga

Whenever we think of yoga, what kind of image emerges in our mind, there are many types of asanas, Surya Namaskar, Alam Vilom and some such asanas but the teachings of yoga are based on many different philosophies and religions, But, Yoga is not a religion, rather it is a discipline, which leads to ultimate freedom.

Following are the 7 traditional types of yoga:
  1. Jnana Yoga

  2. Karma Yoga

  3. Raja Yoga

  4. Mantra Yoga

  5. Bhakti Yoga

  6. Tantra Yoga

  7. Hatha Yoga

The yoga which we know or believe to be yoga is called Hatha Yoga. Within which there are several sub-categories of yoga that describe specific styles of physical practice. 

However, there are six other main types of yoga.

Jnana Yoga - Jnana Yoga

  • Jnana Yoga is the combination of knowledge and wisdom.
  • It is the sum of self-realization and self-asking questions, such as "Who am I?", "Where do I come from?", "What is my purpose?"
  • In Jnana Yoga our attention is turned to ourselves and we instinctively move to answer
  • What is "learned" intellectually rather than in a worldly form is felt and experienced.
  • Ultimately, having self-realizationAfter that the person  gets separated from the ego and remains in the true form.

Karma Yoga - Karma Yoga

  • Karma yoga is the yoga of karma.
  • You must have heard that keep doing good deeds, do not leave worrying about the results, in the same way this yoga leads a person to do good deeds.
  • The person acts without the expectation of reciprocity or personal gain by putting his time, efforts and kindness or any selfless action.
  • For example, it may go unnoticed , such as passing a road to an elderly person, cleaning up the garbage, giving water to the thirsty, fixing a fallen sign or saving a drowning insect from the pool at the mercy of one's heart. .
  • Karma yoga revolves around greater good works and is the biggest cause of many yoga organs.


Raja Yoga

  • Raja yoga is a type of mental yoga.
  • It focuses on the intellectual, emotional and instinctive parts of a person's personality. Its purpose is to awaken the hidden mental potential of the person and take him towards self-knowledge.
  • It is said to bring us into a state of self-knowledge and awaken the psychic potential.
  • It involves the practice of contemplation and meditation.
  • Ideally, it is combined and practiced with the aftermath of hatha yoga, which prepares the physical body for intense meditation.

Mantra Yoga

  • Chanting of Mantras is called Mantra Yoga.
  • Mantra yoga is the sum of primitive sounds that vibrate with the universe.
  • Mantras are solitary words and phrases that are spiritually driven.
  • The repetition of mantras is called japa and in this yoga chanting is done with concentration.

Bhakti Yoga - Bhakti Yoga

  • This yoga is the yoga of the power of love .
  • Bhakti yoga is the yoga of devotion and love for the Supreme Lord or Guru.
  • Whatever form it may take for you, love is characterized by dedication, creating long lasting personal relationships.

Tantra Yoga

  • If any yoga is most misunderstood and misused then the name of tantra yoga is prominent in this .
  • Tantra yoga is the sum of energies.
  • The main aim of Tantra Yoga is to be in a position to bring together feminine (Shakti) and masculine (Shiva) energies within us and thus achieve perfect union.
  • In some parts of the East, tantra is looked down upon and is not even considered a form of yoga.
  • Some people believe that tantra yoga should be rejected but when used with good intentions, it can be extremely beneficial.
  • However, it is not advised to be used without the supervision of a very experienced and pure guru.


Hatha Yoga

  • The word is derived from the Sanskrit ha , meaning "sun," and tha , meaning "moon.
  • Hatha Yoga is the medium of integration or conjunction of Sun and Moon. The prana- (the main life force) is the sun. Through the heart, it becomes active and performs the function of respiration and blood circulation. Apana- it is the moon which is the subtle life force which performs the work of excretion and removal of impurities from the body.
  • It includes all physical exercises and is a popular style of yoga characterized by asanas (postures or poses) in Western culture.
  • Hatha yoga also incorporates practices such as mudras (hand gestures) and pranayama (breath control).
  • Yoga and its aim is to bring harmony between the chakras and energy points in our body.

Within hatha yoga, there are sub-categories of different styles. These are popular types of hatha yoga, which are still commonly referred to today.

Vinyasa

  • Vinyasa yoga is a general form of yoga that includes a variety of asanas along with pranayama.

Kundalini

  • Kundalini yoga is an extremely powerful yoga that awakens the Kundalini energy that lies dormant at the base of the spine and travels upward through the chakras.
  • It involves rapid breathing, invigorating movements and chanting.

Ashtanga

  • Ashtanga is an intense form of yoga, which includes various asanas.
  • Asana is combined with the breath and this asana is done to make the body shapely.

Iyengar

  • Iyengar Yoga is a versatile form of Hatha Yoga that was created by BKS Iyengar.
  • It involves the use of blocks, cushions and straps and is therefore suitable for all body types and abilities.
Bikram
  • Bikram yoga, also known as "hot yoga," is performed in a closed room that has been heated to a high temperature and humidity level.
  • It is a new form of yoga dedicated to flushing out those toxins.
