Ayurveda suggests a number of natural approaches that can effectively control acne.
There are numerous potential causes. They include emotional stress, premenstrual hormonal changes, and chemical or excessive sunlight exposure.A bacterial infection could also be the source of the problem. It is critical to identify the cause so that it can be properly treated or, in the case of chemical or sunlight exposure, simply avoided.
Follow the Ayurvedic Diet
- 50% Whole Grain: whole-wheat breads, cereals, and cooked grains
- 20 % Beans (except lentils), tofu, tempeh, cottage cheese, ricotta cheese, raw milk, egg white, chicken and turkey (white meat only), shrimp, rabbit, and venison
- 20-30% vegetables, with an optional 10% for fresh fruit
Here are three homemade pastes you can use on your skin. They have the potential to be effective acne treatments.
- Make a paste with 1 teaspoon chickpea flour (available at local grocery stores and natural food stores) and wash your face with it. Rinse thoroughly, then apply one of the following:
- Make a paste of almond powder and water and apply it to your face. Allow it to dry and remain on your skin for up to 30 minutes before rinsing it off. (You can easily make your own almond powder in a coffee or nut grinder.)
- A paste of sandalwood and turmeric powders mixed with goat's milk is skin-healing. To make a paste, combine 14 teaspoon turmeric and 12 teaspoon sandalwood powder, then add sufficient goat's milk. Apply this concoction to your face. Note: Your face will appear yellow for up to 5 days, but this formula is very effective at treating acne.
- Cumin-Coriander-Fennel Tea is an effective tea made from common household herbs. Steep 13 teaspoons of each of these three seeds in hot water for 10 minutes after each meal, strain, and drink. This tea should be consumed three times per day.
- Use Blue Water. Fill a clear glass bottle or jar halfway with water, and then wrap it in translucent blue paper (such as blue cellophane, available at art supply and some grocery stores). Allow the bottle to sit in the sun for approximately 2 hours. Drink 1 to 3 cups of water per day. This will be cooling and soothing. Whether you believe it or not, it works!
- Aloe Vera Juice. Drinking half a cup of pure aloe vera juice twice a day may be beneficial.
- Your Colon Must be Clean. It is critical to keep your colon clean in order to remove toxins from your body. You can easily achieve this by putting 12 to 1 teaspoon of amalaki powder on your tongue daily. Take it before bedtime and rinse with warm water.
- Use Melon. At bedtime, apply some melon to your skin and leave it on overnight. Its anti-pitta, cooling properties will aid in acne healing. It also softens the skin.
- Yoga The Lion Pose and the Moon Salutation are two yoga asanas that are recommended for acne.
- Breathing Exercise. Breathing only through the left nostril for 5 to 10 minutes. (This is referred to as the Moon Breath and is said to be cooling; breathing through the right nostril is referred to as the Sun Breath and is said to be heating.) Simply place your thumb over the right nostril and breathe normally through the left. Don't force it if the nostril is blocked; try again later.
- Face Relax. Rub your hands together vigorously to generate heat, then place both hands over your face for a few minutes. This will relax the facial muscles while increasing blood flow. You can also rub your hands together until your palms are warm, then gently touch the heart of your palm to your eyelashes. Our eyelashes are electrically charged; they take that warmth and relieve the pitta under the skin that manifests as acne.
- Visualization. Acne is caused by emotional stress. Visualization is an effective way to relieve stress. Close your eyes and imagine the acne clearing up and disappearing, as if you were communicating with the tissues in your skin that are bursting out in acne.
- Finally, avoid frequently looking in the mirror and feeling bad about your acne.
